Thank you Wheelchair Rugby BASH Volunteers

THANK YOU to all our dedicated volunteers for your fantastic support and dedication with the BASH Wheelchair Rugby Championships 2019. Over the three day period just on one hundred and fifty (150) positions were supported to help this event run smoothly. Thank you all for your flexibility and just jumping in to help out when required because it’s people like you who give their time so generously that makes so much possible. It’s a joy working with every single one of you!

We’ve had some Staff Changes 

Over the past couple of months, the Association has had the pleasure of welcoming some new staff to our services team. After we said farewell to Boccia Sport Coordinator Joe Moynihan at the start May, we welcomed back Nick Such into the role of Wheelchair Basketball Sport Coordinator and Junior Development Coordinator. This is Nick’s second round with Sporting Wheelies and he is super excited to be back.

We are also pleased to announce the recent hiring of Matt Sullivan and Jonas Margolis to our Health and Fitness Centre team as Health and Fitness Centre Support Officers/Personal Trainers. Next time you see Matt or Jonas, please feel free to say hi.

It isn’t without great sadness,however, that we have also said farewell to three long standing team members from our finance department, Edalina, Irene and Sheryl. Edalina has been with the Association for 16 years in the position of Finance manager alongside Irene our Assistant Accountant (10 years) and Sheryl our Payroll Officer (18 years). All three of these ladies have been an incredible asset to the Association and will be dearly missed.

Consequently, the Board has reviewed the alternatives for ensuring that the Association and its members continue to be provided with effective and efficient finance and accounting services. The decision has been taken to outsource the accounting functions to Red Shed Business Advisors. Red Shed is a very experienced provider of outsourced accounting services to the not-for-profit and for-profit businesses.

We thank you for your support and understanding during this time of change.

New Uniforms for our Townsville Cyclone Chasers

Thanks to Woollam Constructions, our junior wheelchair basketball team in Townsville  (the Cyclone Chasers) have again been presented with new uniforms. Woollam Constructions has supported our junior wheelchair basketball program for many years in many ways including, management and staff attending the Townsville end of year awards, presenting our juniors with medals, certificates and gifts, putting on sausage sizzles as well as attending come and try days. Thanks Woollam for your commitment to the Association.

UPDATE: Regional Disability Expos

Let’s Talk Events’ Regional Disability Expos are being held in regional communities along the Queensland coast in 2019 and we are proud to be the auspicing partner. These unique events are aimed at making it easier for regional Australian families, carersand people with disabilities to find the support, productsandservices they need to help them make informed decisions and improve their quality of life.

Over the lastmonth we have chatted with people with disabilities, their families and a range of service providers in Townsville (17 May), Hervey Bay (31 May) and Rockhampton (14 June) about how to make active goals accessible for everyone.

Thanks to our members and volunteers who showcased sports such as boccia, wheelchair basketball andgoalball. It’s been a great response so far with lots of interest!

The Expos are coming to more locations in the coming months:

Wheelchair Rugby BASH 2019

Thirty-eight of Australia’s best Wheelchair Rugby players were in Brisbane for the 2019 Wheelchair Rugby BASH, held at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall 7-9 June 2019.

With both Victoria and New South Wales sending full teams we were able to hold an elite state vs state series of matches; as well as the traditional development games; which allows new and developing players to get a taste of rugby at the next level. The full Queensland Cyclones squad was split into 2 teams (Maroon and Silver) to make a 4 team series.

After a fullround-robin the GIO NSW Gladiators defeated Victoria Protect Thunder for 3 rd places, whilst in the Championship game Queensland Silver defeated Queensland Maroon.

Individual award winners for the weekend were:

Tournament MVP: Zak Madell (Qld Silver)
All Star 4: Chris Bond 3.5 (Qld Maroon)
Andrew Edmondston 2.0 (NSW)

We would like to thank all of our amazing volunteers, referees, mechanics and support staff for such a great job to ensure the event ran smoothly.

Notice of Annual General Meeting 2019

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of The Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Sport and Recreation Association of Queensland Inc, for the year ended 31 January 2019, will be held at 60 Edmondstone Road, Bowen Hills at 6.30pm on Wednesday 17 July 2019.

Nominations for positions on the Association Board are hereby called for and should be made on the nomination form attached. Nominations must be received by the Secretary by close of business on 3 July 2019. The names of all nomination will be displayed on the Health and Fitness Centre notice board from 10 July 2019.

Members who are unable to attend can participate via teleconferencing. Details to be advised. Please note: only financial members are entitled to vote.

Members and supporters of the Association are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting and partake in light refreshments afterwards.
