Sporting Wheelies’ Pathways to Inclusion program supports schools to foster a culture of belonging, strengthen disability awareness and create more inclusive learning environments.
Combining adaptive sport, immersive learning and lived-experience storytelling, the program gives students practical opportunities to better understand disability, challenge assumptions and build empathy.
The flexible program offers tailored experiences across multiple year levels, including:
- Year 7 – Raising the Bar: Through adaptive sports such as wheelchair basketball, students experience the importance of teamwork, resilience and accessibility while developing a deeper understanding of disability through participation.
- Year 10 – Realistic RACE: Students work in teams to complete practical challenges using a range of mobility aids and assistive devices, building problem-solving skills while gaining a greater appreciation of everyday accessibility barriers.
- Year 12 – Lived Experience Leadership Talk: Students hear directly from presenters with lived experience of disability, gaining valuable insights that challenge stereotypes and encourage respectful, inclusive attitudes.
The program also extends beyond students, with professional development for educators and awareness sessions for parents and carers to help strengthen inclusion across the whole school community.
Pathways to Inclusion is currently supported by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (DHDA) – Inclusion and Accessibility Fund, enabling Sporting Wheelies to offer the program to participating schools at a heavily subsidised rate.
Pathways to Inclusion is currently available to schools in Queensland only. If your school is based in another state or territory, we recommend contacting your local disability sport organisation to explore similar opportunities.
Through practical experiences, shared learning and lived experience, Pathways to Inclusion aims to equip school communities with the understanding, confidence and skills to champion inclusion both in and beyond the classroom.
