New Sporting Wheelies Wheelchair Basketball Social League For QLD Athletes.
If you’ve been playing in our wheelchair basketball social sport program or other wheelchair basketball programs and find yourself facing the same opponents every week, you’re not alone. It’s the exact problem our new Social Wheelchair Basketball League is designed to solve.
Starting Term 3, 2026, Sporting Wheelies is rolling out a brand new competitive league that gives Queensland wheelchair basketball players a structured competition, one with structured rounds, real competition, and a finals day to look forward to.
Why We Built This League
A few things pushed us to create this program. Players told us that playing the same teams over and over was getting stale, and it was hurting motivation. At the same time, athletes who aren’t part of the National Wheelchair Basketball League had very few chances to get regular competitive game time.
Queensland’s size doesn’t help either. Without a coordinated competition calendar, it’s been hard for new players to know how to progress from social sport into something more competitive, especially if they’re outside Brisbane. This league is our answer: a clear, structured pathway from social sport through to competitive finals, open to players across the state.

How the League Works
The Wheelchair Basketball League runs alongside our existing social sport sessions, giving players the option to do both.
- League rounds: Competitive round-robin matches in Weeks 3, 6, and 9
- Finals and awards: Week 10, with presentations and trophies/medals for all participants
- Game format: 10-minute warm-up, four 10-minute quarters, a 5-minute halftime break, and 1-minute breaks between quarters
Every league includes venue hire, qualified referees, a structured competition draw, and an athlete presentation to close out the season.
