2017 SPORTING WHEELIES AND DISABLED ASSOCIATION ANNUAL AWARDS

Nominations extended – now closing 5pm Friday 19 January 2018

AWARDS GUIDELINES

* The 2017 Annual Awards will recognise the outstanding achievements of Queensland athletes with a disability who have excelled on and off the sporting field, as well as individuals and organisations that have made a significant contribution towards the development of sport and physical activity for people with a disability in Queensland between 17 October 2016 and 31 December 2017.

* Please carefully read the 2017 Awards Description and Selection Criteria for each award category on the following page of this document before completing the form. Note: the criteria for some award categories has been revised and differs from previous years.

* All nominees must be Queensland residents.

* Nominations must be endorsed by a state sporting organisation or relevant authority.

* All record claims must be accompanied by supporting documentation.

* It is expected that all nominees display a positive attitude towards members, volunteers and Association staff.

* The awards will be decided by a selection panel comprising experienced representatives.

* Award winners will be selected based on the quality of information provided outlining their achievements/contribution, not the number of nominations received.

* The selection panel reserves the right to move a nomination to an alternate category if deemed appropriate/necessary based on achievements/selection criteria.

* A nominee may win more than one award if they are deemed eligible and outstanding in more than one award category.

* Finalists will be notified of their selection via phone, email or post, and will be encouraged to attend the Annual Awards Presentation Dinner.

* The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Presentation Dinner on Friday 23 February 2018 at the Kedron-Wavell Services Club, Chermside (Brisbane).

SELECTION CRITERIA

Subheading: Sporting Wheelie of the Year

Must be a current Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association member.
This award acknowledges excellence by an athlete with a physical disability or vision impairment who has both excelled in their chosen sport, and made a significant contribution to the Association eg. through promotion and awareness.

Subheading: Open Male/Female Athlete of the Year awards

Presented to a male and female athlete of any age who have excelled in their chosen sport. Must be an individual with a physical disability or vision impairment who has competed in open age competition (including junior athletes competing in open age international events) and is classifiable within their nominated sport.

Subheading: Junior Male/Female Athlete of the Year awards

Presented to an up-and-coming junior male and junior female athlete who have excelled in their chosen sport (not competing in open age international competition, but may be competing in junior age international competition). Must be an individual athlete with a physical disability or vision impairment under 20yrs of age as at 31/12/2017, and who is classifiable within their sport.

Subheading: Most Improved Athlete of the Year

Presented to an athlete who has improved their performance significantly during the nomination period. Athlete must have a physical disability or vision impairment and be classifiable within their sport.

Subheading: Team of the Year

Presented to the team with the most outstanding performance or improved performance over the nomination period. Teams must include at least two athletes competing together and can be of mixed gender. Athletes must have a physical disability or vision impairment and be classifiable within their sport.

Subheading: Coach of the Year

Open to coaches of individual athletes or teams of athletes with a physical disability or vision impairment. Nominees should demonstrate a significant contribution to the performance of the athlete or team, or have been responsible for a major increase in the standard of coaching in their sport.

Subheading: Official of the Year

Presented to an official (eg. referee, umpire, bench official) who has attained a level of excellence and shown outstanding commitment to a sport for athletes with a physical disability or vision impairment.

Subheading: Col and Peter Marsh Volunteer of the Year

Presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Association as a volunteer. Must be an individual Association member (includes honorary members).

Subheading: Allclear Print and Signs Fitness Award

Presented to a person with a physical disability or vision impairment who has shown an outstanding commitment to attending a gym (includes local/regional gyms) on a regular basis, who also promotes health and wellbeing and motivates other gym members to keep fit and active.

Subheading: Paul Bodington Media Award

Presented to an individual journalist or media organisation demonstrating excellence in media coverage that increases awareness of sport, recreation and fitness for people with a disability through print, web, social media, radio or television.

Subheading: Inclusive Services Award

Presented to a local/state organisation that has enhanced the lives of Queenslanders with a disability through targeted sport and healthy activity programs/services/ initiatives. The nomination must outline how the organisation has demonstrated sustainable outcomes across areas including: policy and planning; promotion and marketing; participation and/or competition initiatives; and education of staff or volunteers.
