Equestrian/Horse riding

equestrian-horse_ridingHorses have played an important role in Australian culture, and horse riding is still a popular recreational activity and competitive sport. People of all abilities enjoy riding for the freedom and strong bond between horse and rider. Para-equestrian is one of a number of disciplines available in the sport that offers opportunities specifically for riders with a disability.

Local programs

Owning a horse requires a lot of land and can be quite expensive. Local equestrian and riding centres can provide access to horses and riding equipment. Contact your local equestrian or riding centre for information about come and try opportunities, beginner courses and membership. For a list of centres in your area, visit:

Equestrian Queensland
Riding for the Disabled Association of Queensland
Pony Club Association of Queensland

If you would like assistance making contact with your local riding centre, please contact us.

Development

Coaching and development opportunities are provided through local centres and governing bodies for the sport.

Competition opportunities and pathways

Para equestrian riders can compete at state, national and international level, including national and world championships and the Paralympics.

Para equestrian riders have to be classified to compete nationally and internationally.

Equipment

Equestrian and riding centres can provide access to suitable horses and riding equipment including reins, saddles, blankets and helmets.

Other roles

You don’t have to ride to be involved. You can make a contribution as a club volunteer, coach, team manager, official, administrator of the sport or as an enthusiastic supporter. For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact your local centre or Equestrian Queensland.

Working with mainstream sport

We are proud to be working with Equestrian Queensland as part of Sports CONNECT to develop more opportunities for people with a disability to participate as riders, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers.
