Fifty-five bowlers with a disability gathered for the 2017 Multi-Disability Lawn Bowls State Championships at Chermside from 27-30 August, with players competing across four categories: QBBA (Queensland Blind Bowlers Association), Sporting Wheelies, Life Stream and Hard of Hearing.
In the QBBA Vision Impaired Pairs competition, the gold medal playoff came down to duo Wayne McDonald (Aspley) and Jake Fehlberg (Burleigh Heads) against the pairing of Bryan Forster (Enoggera) and Lynne Seymour (Thuringowa City). The well-oiled machine of McDonald and Fehlberg were able to come up trumps winning the final 19-11 and hand Forster and Seymour the silver.
In the bronze medal playoff, Don Dias (Enoggera) and Bill O’Rourke (Tin Can Bay) came away with a bronze medal for their efforts, defeating Marian Morrison (Aspley) and Joy Forster (Chermside).
In the Sporting Wheelies Women’s Singles competition Kaytlyn Smith (Edge Hill, pictured) pulled off a 21-16 win to secure the title over second placed Louise Hoskins (Sth. Johnstone), while Deb McGarry (Burrum Heads) beat Serena Bonnell (Burleigh Heads) to take bronze.
In the Sporting Wheelies Men’s Singles, it was a great first outing for Tweed Heads’ Damian Delgado at this year’s championships, with Delgado defeating veteran bowler Anthony Bonnell (Burleigh Heads) in an incredibly close final match, which saw the comp debutant just get over the line and win his first title 21-20.
The bronze medal went to North Ipswich’s Don Currie who was able to defeat Andrew Reed and claim third place honours in the Men’s Sporting Wheelies Singles.
